2nd floor studio "STUDIO 3" for today

Extended techniques are often thought of as special effects or noises that should be learned after a violist is already an expert at their instrument. This workshop, open to all ages, breaks down that preconceived notion by showing how techniques can be used to develop a richer understanding of the relationship between weight, bow speed, and contact point at any point in a student’s development. By allowing the student to experiment in extremes and mismatched pairings, students can come to a better understand how these elements to produce a beautiful sound in many different timbres.
The workshop focuses on techniques used by composer Andrew Norman. Lanzilotti has worked closely with Norman over the past five years, both in developing the educational resource Shaken Not Stuttered, and through interviews and scholarship for publications such as Music & Literature and Neue Zeitschrift für Musik. The free online resource http://www.shakennotstuttered.com allows both performers and audience members alike to access new sounds and listen to them in a masterclass format where they feel like they are in the room with the composer, allowing for a new access point to contemporary music.
Norman’s playful approach to the viola inspires musicians to engage with the physicality of playing, and empowers musicians of all ages to enjoy the exploration of timbre on the instrument. Other examples from works by Jagoda Szmytka and Dai Fujikura (whom Lanzilotti collaborated when he was writing the required piece Engraving for the Tokyo International Viola Competition) show different ways that composers who Lanzilotti has collaborated with personally approach extended techniques.
In the workshop, Lanzilotti will demonstrate first how timbre can be used to show structure, and the
importance of focused and dedicated practice of extended techniques. Following that, the idea of weight, bow speed, and contact point as the foundation for sound production on the viola will be explored with participants in the workshop. The participants will be asked to have their instruments out in order to experiment with the sounds in the workshop, and thereby get experience finding their own balance of the various techniques. The workshop exemplifies the congress theme of “Exploring New Ways to Perform.”
